STEAM

LEADING TEAM OF STEAM SPECIALISTS

BUILDING A STEAM PROGRAM

Led a team of specialists with backgrounds in science, engineering, technology, math and art instruction. As the leader, I provided coaching and mentorship for specialists in the collaborative process of designing STEAM units and lessons with homebase teachers.

Led the work of planning the development and implementation of a STEAM program where every K-5 student experienced STEAM, transdisciplinary units that involved real world projects/assessments and the creative problem-solving process. Developed a culture that positively reinforces and values empathetic, creative thinking and behaviors that include values like, risk-taking, collaboration, optimism, curiosity, adaptability, and empathy.

DESIGNING A STEAM MAKERSPACE

Designed a makerspace where students had the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills from multiple disciplines to design, prototype, and manufacture physical or digital products; transforming their creative ideas into tangible things. Space provided a flexible learning environment for how students are grouped and what activities they can do based on where they are in the learning process.

STEAM PERSONALIZED INQUIRY

Co-construct and design personalized inquiry projects with students based on their interests, passions, preferences and choice.

These long-term, open-ended projects are standards-based, integrated learning experiences that provide students the opportunity to drive their own learning, and apply content knowledge and competencies within authentic performance tasks.

CO-DESIGNING/TEACHING STEAM UNITS

COORDINATING ES STEAM CURRICULUM

Developing and implementing (co-teaching) transdisciplinary units and with homebase teachers that contains authentic performance tasks that involve sustained inquiry, student voice and choice, meaningful integration of learning aspirations, critique, revision, and reflection, as well as an authentic audience.

Participating in weekly meetings with grade-level teams to collaborate on transdisciplinary units and manage the sequencing of learning activities for multiple subject areas.

Developed and aligned curriculum with core content standards and develop a scope and sequence for K-5 units. Create curriculum-related plans (ie. transdisciplinary unit planner), gather resources for unit implementation, and provide professional development for teams to navigate school's curriculum.

K-12 STEAM VERTICAL ALIGNMENT

Facilitated vertical alignment for K-12 technology, design, and computing courses as the K-12 Design and Innovation Lead. Served as a model, coach, and mentor for teachers in other disciplines as they implement creative problem-solving and applied learning instructional practices.

COORDINATING STEAM SHOWCASES

Planned and executed opportunities for students to showcase their work for their community (i.e. fairs, exhibitions). These showcases were designed to bring student accountability, enhance community learning, and to celebrate and highlight of the learning process.

LEADING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Providing professional development for teachers and administrators within the school to build confidence and capacity for innovative teaching and learning approaches like STEAM, project-based learning, and design thinking.

COLLABORATING WITH STEAM EXPERTS

Collaborated with experts in STEAM fields to enhance learning experiences, for example having MIT students participate in an assembly and science lessons within transdisciplinary units, and the city's urban planner providing feedback for 2nd grade city plans.

HELPING SCHOOLS IN STEAM

COMMUNICATING TO STAKEHOLDERS

Continuously deliver simple, clear, and direct communication of complex information to all stakeholders (STEAM team, administration, teachers, and parents) through different methods and mediums.

Use storytelling to present organized and rational arguments, help stakeholders gain an understanding of the mission, vision, and goals of the STEAM program, and help educators see the STEAM learning come alive.

Guiding educators and schools in transforming the education they provide their students by designing and implementing STEAM opportunities, and integrating the design thinking methodology. Where students can develop into agents of change; individuals who have the learning behaviors, strategies, and dispositions to approach and tackle complex, real world problems through creative means.

The work we do as partners help better equip schools in preparing students with the belief and abilities to succeed in their future professions, projects, personal lives, and civic duties.
